The Royal Decree 635/2010, of May 14th, regulates at the national level the basic content of higher artistic education in Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage established in the Organic Law 2/2006, of May 3rd, on Education.
According to an informative note from the Ministry of Education issued after the approval of this Royal Decree in the Council of Ministers on May 14th, 2010, the objectives of this regulation are as follows:
- Determine the content of higher education in Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage in the context of the organization of Spanish Higher Education within the European framework.
- Define the basic content of the curricula leading to the degree of Bachelor’s in Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage.
- Establish the cross-cutting and general competencies of the Bachelor’s Degree in Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage, as well as the specific competencies and professional profiles for each specialty.
- Set the subjects of basic training and the mandatory subjects for each specialty with their descriptors and corresponding number of credits.
With this Royal Decree, a long process was concluded whose main objective has been to preserve the quality of education and ensure the qualification of future professionals in the field of conservation and restoration, by placing it in a higher education space consistent with its own level of excellence and specificity. After its approval, it became necessary for the Autonomous Communities to develop specific study plans for each degree and territory.
The current Curriculum of higher artistic education in Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage for the Community of Madrid came into effect from the publication of Decree 33/2011, of June 2nd (BOCM of June 14th). From this moment, our education is registered with all rights in the new Madrid Higher Education Space, which represents a novel commitment to achieve social recognition and excellence in non-university higher education. The success of this initiative will require all the support and dissemination that the Educational Administrations are willing to offer, at least until its complete consolidation in society.
